This week I had to write three essays, two of which were due on the same day. I have decided to share with you my English essay.
As the wind blows, carrying dust to an unfamiliar location, time passes peacefully. When families drive eight hours with no music, time passes tediously. After a prolonged nine months, time passes to swiftly.
Life is like riding a boat in the ocean; you never know which way the waves will rock you. During the stress, confusion, and happiness, time passes in its own way. One of the most constant ways time glides is through seasons. Because of the consistency of events that occur in a particular season, humans look forward to what the season brings.
Spring
"Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn." ~Lewis Gizzard
Spring is always the season that follows winter. In the early days of spring, the air is still cold. During this longing for warmth, tulips pop out of the snow, bright and ready for a brand new day. Tall trees have little pink blossoms waiting to be seen by the whole world. The days following are filled with the song of a blue jay finding his or her mate.
The two blue jays bring new life into the once sleeping world. Springtime in my life brings competitions that happen only once a year. Families start planning their vacations that involve hours in the car and sometimes Disneyland. People get wrapped up in the thought of heat, entertainment, and happiness, also known as summer.
Summer
"Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it." ~Russel Baker
Suddenly the world is completely alive. Trees have branches full of green leaves, screaming the arrival of summer. The once sleeping flowers all bloom, creating an array of color and beautiful (and sometimes atrocious) aromas.
Children are all over the streets, playing with friends for hours on end. The families that planned their vacations to Disneyland in the spring are pushing their way into the line for Space Mountain. Swimming pools are filled with swimmers of all ages enjoying the heat while wading in the water. People that have the desire to barbeque swarm to the park to have the best spot for their party. Freeways are saturated with construction and traffic jams.
Autumn
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their won freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves." ~John Muir
After a hot, exciting summer, nature begins to calm down. The air becomes crisp, sunsets radiant in a warm, analogous color scheme. Leaves on deciduous trees convert to red, orange, and yellow.
As soon as it all happened, it is taken away. The beautiful leaves full of color fall onto the ground, only to be raked and have children thrown into. The warm colors of the sunset fade. Soon no one will leave their home without grabbing their warm jacket that was packed away for the summer.
Winter
"There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you... In spring, summer, and fall, people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the courntry, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself." ~Ruth Stout
Winter consists of one color: white. Snow falls gently on the earth, wrapping it in a blanket like a mother wraps her newborn baby. The once colorful trees are left naked, lifeless. Black ice covers the streets. Bears hibernate in caves. The world is asleep.
Little children, bundled in coats, hats, gloves, and scarves construct snowmen and fortresses. With the furnace on full-blast, families enjoy the privacy of their homes. Anyone who does leave their home without a coat is asking for frostbite.
People come and people go; memories are lived and re-lived. Time passes unexpectedly, lifelessly, and happily. Through all this change, seasons are constant; winter is always followed by spring, which is followed by summer, and so on. It is this consistency that mankind looks forward to: the harmony of nature.
